Research has shown that readers who engage in regular repeated readings improve their word recognition, reading rate, comprehension, and overall reading proficiency. As students regularly read and perform these age-appropriate texts, they improve their decoding, interpretation, and ultimately comprehension of the materials. Fluency has two basic parts. Reading fluency is the ability to read quickly and accurately while using expression and proper phrasing. Speaking fluency is the ability to express oneself easily and gracefully. Oral reading is a great way for students to practice fluency and for teachers to assess fluency.
